The Clay Palayok Workshop offers participants an opportunity to learn how to create a traditional Filipino palayok vessel while reconnecting with the deeper teachings of clay and the ancestral memory it holds. Originally developed for the Filipinos in the diaspora, this offering seeks to engage new communities through a hands-on experience grounded in cultural preservation, creativity, and connection.

The workshop begins with a gentle body-awareness practice designed to prepare participants for the creative process. Participants are then introduced to the fundamentals of handbuilding and guided through the creation of a miniature palayok vessel.

As participants work with clay, the workshop creates space for open dialogue, shared reflection, and personal exploration. The experience concludes with a period of quiet reflection, inviting participants to consider their relationship with memory, ancestry, and the earth.

Participants may take their unfired vessels home, have them fired at a local pottery studio, or return them to the earth through a personal or communal ritual. The vessels are intended as objects for ancestral altars or for holding dry goods and are not designed for contact with water or food.

Wir sind zwei Psychologinnen mit philippinischen Wurzeln, aufgewachsen in der Diaspora. In unserer Arbeit verbinden wir körperorientierte, communitybasierte, und kulturreflektierteAnsätze. Inspiriert von Sikolohiyang Pilipino, Embodiment und kollektiver Fürsorge, erforschen wir Zugehörigkeit, Verbundenheit und Resilienz in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher und ökologischer Unsicherheit.

Ausgehend von Konzepten wie Kapwa und Pakikiramdam werden Filipino Values als verkörperte, relationale Erfahrungen jenseits fester Definitionen erforscht. Durch Körperarbeit, Bewegung im Raum, Reflexion und Kleingruppenarbeit entsteht einer fahrbarer Zugang zu Zugehörigkeit, Care und kollektiver Resilienz.

Der Workshop berücksichtigt transnationale Lebensrealitäten in der Diaspora sowie gesellschaftliche und ökologische Unsicherheiten und fragt danach, welche Menschen, Gemeinschaften und Orte uns Halt und Orientierung geben. Eine kreative „Value Landscape“ macht persönliche Ressourcen und Verbundenheit sichtbar und lädt dazu ein, diese individuell zu erkunden.

Silke Lapina is a Filipino‑German visual artist whose work blends religious symbolism with pop‑culture aesthetics exploring how spirituality persists and transforms in secular urban life. Drawing on her bicultural background, she investigates identity, memory, and belief through intimate, performative gestures.

Lapina will discuss with Chan and invited guests one of her works of art – a two-part video in which the artist’s mother reconnects with an object she used during her training as a teenager under martial law in the Philippines. In the first sequence, she attempts to reassemble it, pausing as muscle memory returns; in the second, she repeats fragments of a training routine, the gestures imperfect yet still recognisable. Rather than retelling history, the work explores how memory lives in the body – how repetition shapes identity, how knowledge is embodied, and how stories can be reclaimed across generations through movement. In doing so, it creates space to revisit family histories that often remain unspoken.

Building a business is a lifelong journey, and its true heartbeat often lies within the family structure. This forward-looking panel discussion explores how family flourishing and entrepreneurship intersect to create lasting impact across diverse multicultural backgrounds in Europe.

Moderated by Marijo Eleazar, the panel features John Eleazar, co-author of the chapter “Cultivating Family Flourishing among Filipino Entrepreneurs through Intergenerational Storytelling” in Common Diversities 2 Filipino Europeans Remaking the Past, Shaping the Future alongside invited guest entrepreneurs representing diverse cultural heritages and generational perspectives across the European business landscape.

They will discuss how family businesses strengthen qualitative capitals such as human, intellectual, social, and reputational capital, transform cross-cultural setbacks into resilience, and use intergenerational storytelling to inspire a culture of family flourishing.

Beyond Healthcare: Scaling Roadmaps to unlock the diverse talents of Filipinos in Austria

For five decades, the prevailing narrative in Austria has closely linked the Filipino diaspora to the healthcare sector. While their invaluable contribution is undeniable, this narrow focus often overlooks a broader truth: the Philippines produces highly educated, multilingual professionals from some of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious universities. This panel challenges stereotypes and explores how Austria can rethink its approach to Filipino excellence. The discussion will bridge perception and reality, asking how Austria can build an ecosystem where Filipino professionals truly feel accommodated, valued and empowered. The panel will examine how the Austrian integration landscape and the Philippine (representatives) diaspora can contribute and help write a new chapter defined by diversity and mutual growth.

„Antirassismus ist Haltung“

„Antirassistisch zu sein bedeutet, eine klare Haltung zu zeigen“, sagt der Journalist Simon Inou. Nicht schweigen, sondern etwas tun. Im Rahmen der Antirassismus.Tage, die er jährlich in Österreich organisiert, lädt er Initiativen und Menschen ein, die sich proaktiv engagieren. Höhepunkt ist die Antirassismus.Messe im März, die heuer den Schwerpunkt auf antiasiatischen Rassismus legte. Die Messe ist ein Ort der Vernetzung, der gegenseitigen Stärkung und Bestärkung. Sie zeigt dass Menschen in ihrem Engagement nicht alleine sind und wie wichtig community-übergreifende Zusammenarbeit ist. Was können wir voneinander lernen, wie unterstützen wir einander? Welche Aktionen können wir gemeinsam setzen? Wie Haltung zeigen, wenn rechtsextreme und -konservative Kräfte Intoleranz und Hass schüren? Wie gehen wir mit unterschiedlichen Positionen innerhalb unserer Communities um?

Im Rahmen ihres Podcasts „Gekommen, um zu bleiben“ spricht Marina Wetzlmaier mit Menschen mit Migrationsbiographie über Lebensgeschichten, Erfahrungen und aktuelle Themen. Simon Inou stellte mehrere Medienprojekte auf die Beine. Er ist Gründer von blackaustria.info, dem Informationsportal über Menschen aus Afrika und deren Diaspora in Österreich.

The Philippines is known for its long and complex colonial history, which has had far-reaching effects not only on its own culture but also on the realities in the colonizing countries. With the Heidelberg Declaration of 2019, an alliance of ethnographic museums from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland has dedicated themselves to, among other things, pursuing decolonization efforts, acknowledging the colonial entanglements of most of their collections. This discussion will focus on one such effort by the Ethnographic Museum at University of Zurich and studiyo filipino: they have been in collaboration regarding the museum’s collection of Philippine objects acquired around the 19th/20th century since 2014/2021. Members of studiyo filipino will speak about this type of decolonization effort, their challenges and turning points, the role of language, and the lessons they can share with other so-called source communities.

Der semidokumentarische Comic „Homestories“ von Vina Yun folgt den Spuren dieser wenig beachteten Migrationsgeschichte und zeichnet die Anfänge der hiesigen koreanischen Community nach. Ebenso erzählt er vom Aufwachsen der „Zweiten Generation“: ein Alltag in der biederen Alpenrepublik zwischen Bruno Kreisky und Teenie-Zeitschriften, Acid House und „Waldheim-Affäre“, Alltagsrassismus und Whitney Houston.

„Homestories“ verbindet Comicbilder mit historischer Recherche und persönlichen Erinnerungen zu einer Erzählung über Migration, Generationenverhältnisse und das Leben in der koreanischen Diaspora.

Annette und Arlene sprechen über zwei philippinische Romane, die 2025 auf Deutsch herausgekommen sind: Das Meer der Aswang von Allan N. Derain und
Die 70er von Lualhati Bautista. Eine Kurzlesung gibt Einblick in die Lebendigkeit der Sprache, die Derain schreibt. Sie trägt auch dazu bei, das Deutsche zu erweitern.

• SangHimig Choristers is a mixed Filipino choir based in Austria, founded two years ago under the musical direction of Deborah Tschirch. Composed of dedicated singers from diverse backgrounds, the choir is united by a shared passion for sacred music, cultural expression, and service through song. Rooted in faith and fellowship, SangHimig Choristers aims to glorify God through choral excellence. Its repertoire includes sacred, contemporary, and Filipino choral works that reflect both spiritual devotion and cultural heritage.

• The Philippinische Gottesdienst Gemeinde Cherubim is a joyful children’s choir based in Vienna. Under the guidance of their dedicated trainer, Kay Bigyan, the children use their voices to share God’s love, inspire hope, and celebrate the beauty of Filipino culture.
